Colouring book ideas

A book of their own life, in their own photographs

Their wedding, their street, the boat, the dog, the people they raised. Each photograph is printed opposite the same moment drawn in bold open lines, so the picture and the page sit side by side.

Choosing photographs that carry a life

1

Reach further back than you think

Photographs from childhood, early working life and young adulthood are often the ones a person responds to most readily. Recent photos are worth including, but a book weighted towards the earlier decades usually works better.

2

Name everyone in the caption

Write who is in the photo, where it was, and roughly when. "Margaret and Tom, Manly, 1968" gives a carer or a visiting grandchild something to open a conversation with, which a picture alone does not.

3

Choose bold over detailed

Pick the simplest line-art level. Large open shapes and thick, unbroken outlines are easier to see and easier to work with than fine detail, and the page still looks like the photograph.

A photo on the left page and the same moment as a colouring page on the right.

Every spread pairs the original photo with its colouring page, so the memory and the drawing sit side by side.

How it works

  1. Pick your photos. Six to eighteen, straight from your phone.
  2. Choose a cover and title. The cover stays in full colour.
  3. Pick the detail level. Simple and bold for little hands, or intricate for older colourists.
  4. We print and post it. Or email you a print-ready PDF, if you would rather print it yourself.

Questions

Who is this actually for?

Usually a family member or a carer buys it, and it is used together: by an adult child during a visit, or by a lifestyle coordinator in a residential home. It is a shared activity as much as an object.

The photographs are old prints. Will they work?

Often yes. Scans give the best result, but a clear phone photo of a print taken in good light usually works too. You will see a preview before you pay, so you can check before spending anything.

How are the photographs handled?

They are used to produce the book and deleted once it ships. They are never sold, shared, or retained.
